Around 100 A.D. the Romans built a fortress on the Danube River. Next to the fortress a settlement was built which nowadays is Vienna. After the Romans left, the town remained and began to expand. The area was occupied by the Hungarians and later on by the Babenbergs. The emperor moved his court into Vienna around 1155 and named the lands Austria.

By 1815 he was defeated and the power was restored. After 30 years there was an uprise against the monarchy, but that didn't last long. In the last half of the 19th century the city grew as population started to grow.
In 1916 the monarchy ends and Vienna is forced into an alliance with Nazi Germany in 1938 and becomes a province of the Third Reich. In World War II Vienna was destroyed by allied bombs.
