Prague as a city began between 880-890 AD, when Prince Bořivoj I started to build his residence at the site. Later on a second residence was built. In the 13th century a lot of people came together in old Prague town and built a fortification. In 1257 King Otakar II established and fortified Prague New Town.
King Charles IV brought the golden age to Prague from 1346-1378. He built the first university in central Europe (1348) and enlarged the city area. Prague became one of the largest cities in Europe with more than 40,000 inhabitants.
The Hussite revolution (1419-1434) liquidated royal power in the city. Many of the religious buildings were destroyed during the revolution. In 1526 the Habsburgs gained the crown and reduced the rights of Prague citizens. It was a black age for the citizens, but culture and architecture flourished. In 1612 a Roman emperor relocated his royal seat to Prague and drew a lot of artists, magicians and scientist to the city. In 1620 the battle of White Mountain took place and the loss of the Protestants forced the Royals to move back to Vienna. In 1748 the Roman Empire united four towns and merged it into Prague city.
On 28 October 1918 the independent Czechoslovakian Republic was founded. Prague was then one of the largest cities in the world, spreading over 171.64 square km. In 1938 Prague had over 1 million citizens. During World War II Prague was occupied by the German forces and was liberated in 1945. In 1968 the Prague Spring took place in an attempt to reform socialism, but the attempt failed. In 1989 another revolution, namely the Velvet Revolution, took place and a government of National tolerance was formed.
