In 1307 two towns, Cölln and Berlin, affiliated for a union. In 1451 elector Friedrich II declared the twin town his residence after a series of riots. Berlin rose to be a Royal capital town after Friedrich III declared himself King Friedrich the first in Prussia. The city was build and expanded. In 1806 Napoleon occupied the city until 1814.
In the following decades the economy in Berlin boomed and the population grew rapidly. In 1871 the city became the capital of the 'Deutches Reich' and the population rate exceeded one million. After the defeat in World War I the city suffered riots and a deep crisis. Out of the riots a Republic was proclaimed in 1918. In spite of the riots and economical crisis, Berlin flourished in the 1920's and became the center of extravagant nightlife. In 1933 Hitler took over and started the persecution of Jews, communists and many others. After World War II the city was finally devastated in 1945. Berlin was split into four parts and administered to France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and the USA. In 1948 the city became the center of the cold war between the USA and the Soviet Union and was split into two pieces by the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
In 1989 the Wall was torn down and Berlin became the residence of the Federal government.
